Madrid’s Legendary Chocolatería San Ginés Will Open First Asia Branch In Manila

Known for its golden churros and velvety hot chocolate, the beloved Spanish institution Chocolatería San Ginés is finally making its way to the Philippines.

Founded in 1894 in a narrow passage between Puerta del Sol and the Teatro Real, Chocolatería San Ginés has long been a culinary institution, drawing everyone from discerning food lovers to pop stars, world leaders, and top athletes. Now, the world-famous Madrid institution—beloved for its golden churros and thick, velvety hot chocolate—is finally making its way to Philippine shores. Its first branch, which also marks the brand’s debut in Asia, is set to open its doors this February 2026 at The Podium Mall.

A Spanish Institution In Manila

Long cherished by Madrileños for generations, thousands of people line up outside the 130-year-old landmark (open around the clock) to savor its beloved sweet treats. Over the years, celebrated figures such as former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Spanish singer Julio Iglesias, global pop star Dua Lipa, supermodel Naomi Campbell, and Argentine football legend Diego Maradona have all stopped by to experience what many gastronomes and critics call “the world’s best churro.” Soon, Filipino diners will also have the chance to enjoy this signature San Ginés specialty—a simple kind of luxury that is hot, sweet, and always dipped in chocolate.

“Bringing San Ginés to the Philippines is about more than food—it’s about sharing a piece of Madrid’s cultural soul with Manila,” says Pedro Trapote, founder of San Ginés.

Beyond The Chocolate

Aside from its signature churros con chocolate, Chocolatería San Ginés will also treat Manila diners to a selection of delicious Spanish fare. The flagship store will house a Spanish-style cafeteria serving authentic dishes such as paella and tortilla, a curated tapas section, and their well-loved signature chocolate cake. Each plate reflects not only Madrid’s vibrant culinary tradition but also its warmth and spirited charm.
